YMMV Review

This is the second bottle I have reviewed from Hydro Flask. Hydro Flask is a retailer based out of Bend, OR. I am also based out of Bend so that already gives them thumbs up in my book. =) When I first saw the release of the Growler I was intrigued but not sure how much I would use a bottle that big. Curiosity got the best of me, and I worked with Hydro Flask to do a review of the bottle.

The Big Bottle

I tested the bottle by filling it up with cold liquid and then drinking it. All kidding aside, since I tested this in the spring and summer, I mainly used it for cold liquids. I tried to take it on trips where I needed liquids, and I knew that it would be difficult to have access along the way. I used the bottle in temperatures up to 95 degrees so it got a good test.

Like the 18 oz version I tested before, the Growler is a stainless steel insulated bottle. The capacity is three and a half times larger than the 18 oz version. It is by far the largest water bottle I own and opens up quite a bit of possibilities. The Growler is also quite a bit larger and heavier than the smaller versions. It reminds me of a large water bottle you would see weightlifters carrying around the gym or something like that. The bottle is made of 18/8 Stainless Steel with a BPA-free plastic & rubber cap. 18/8 Stainless steel is Carbon Steel with 18% chromium and 8% nickel for anti-rust and anti-staining properties. The stainless steel is food grade and since it does not need a liner, there is nothing inside to get scratched. This is similar to what is used in cutlery. It is resistant to odors, stains, flavors, bacteria, and does not impart any flavor either. The stainless steel is also recyclable.

The cap is made of a BPA-free plastic with a rubber gripper inserted for easier twisting of the cap. The bottles are designed to keep cold liquid’s cold up to 24 hours and hot liquids ho for up to 12 hours. To do this the bottle is a double walled bottle with vacuum insulation in between these layers. This means Hydroflask has removed all the air between the layers. Since heat is transferred by matter, the vacuum creates a space with virtually nothing in it, therefore, it does not conduct heat and creates an insulating barrier. The only location that is not fully insulted is the cap, but you need a place to drink out of. Speaking of the mouth, the growler has the widest mouth in the whole Hydro Flask range. The double-wall bottle also makes it so the outside of the bottle is sweat free with cold liquids and will not be hot to the touch with hot liquids. The outer layers of most of their bottles have been powder coated with a non- toxic food-grade coating making it safe for all. They even use soy-based ink for their logos.

Cap with Rubber Gripper

This makes a bottle that is not only made of environmentally safe materials but also is reusable instead of the store bought plastic bottles. While the original materials are not sourced from sustainable sources, at least the bottle can be recycled at the end of its usable life. Hydro Flask also started another really cool project. This project allows the user to donate 5% of the gross profits from their bottle purchase to a non-profit of their choosing. Each bottle sold has a code that can be entered on the FivePercentBack.org website, and then they can choose their charity. You’ll find organizations that represent environmental stewardship, healthy lifestyle choices, emergency response services, animal advocacies, social efforts, humanitarian services and many more that work to unite people and precipitate change. This program is yet another example of businesses and customers partnering to enhance the Earth and the well-being of her various species. When I first saw the size of the Growler, I was not sure how I would use it. It holds 64 oz of liquid and with all that in there it is not light. Since then I have come to realize that it can be very handy depending on the situation. I have used it on road trips, car camping, entertainment venues in the summer, and even rock climbing at Smith Rock. I know many people like to use the Growler for their beer but as a non drinker I had to come up with some other ideas. Apart from water, I also used it for fruit smoothies on a hot day cheering on a bike race. The Growler can be used for whatever you can imagine.

Large Mouth Opening

Talking with Hydro Flask, the vacuum insulation will keep the liquids hot or cold longer because the lack of matter to transfer heat. The only part of the bottle that does not have this technology is the cap, but they assured me it would work well. I can say that the bottle definitely works. The amount of time it will insulate will depend slightly on the conditions it is sitting in. When I took it rock climbing, the bottle spent six hours in my hot car on a 90+ degree day, and my ice cubes were melting by the time I took a drink. The water was still cool though. Testing it another time and leaving it is a controlled 70 degree building, I had ice cubes still in my bottle 12 hours later, and it was still cold 24 hours later. According to Hydro Flask, the increased amount of liquid in the Growler will help it stay hot or cold longer than smaller amounts. The bottle has been plenty durable, and I have not had any issues with it. I must say that I have not been too harsh on it either. The cap also works well and has not leaked for me. The rubber gripper is also a nice touch as it makes it much easier to get the cap on and off.

Overall ★★★½☆

Overall, the Growler will turn some heads both because of its appearance and performance. It really does keep your liquids of choice hot or cold for long periods of time. The stainless steel was also easy to clean and did not have any residual flavor or impart its own, which is important. No one likes metal tasting water. I really have been impressed by both bottles I have tested, they have performed well, looked cool, and are from here in Bend, Oregon, which is a plus. There are not too many drawbacks to the Growler apart from the size and weight. If you are looking to carry around 64 oz of liquid and keep it hot or cold, then this should be expected. The Hydro Flask Growler retails for $50, if you get one do not forget to donate 5% to your charity of choice. This is a bit expensive up front but should last a really long time. Better yet, it is recyclable when you are done with it. As always, your mileage may vary.

Just purchased the 64 oz Growler ……in black. (I have several other smaller hydro flasks and can attest to their outstanding performance)

My question is this…….does color matter ? I could only get this one in black.

It seems black would absorb heat (sunlight) and hence not be as effective with cold beverages as a lighter colored one.

    Should I be concerned ?
