Melissa and I have had some of the older Camelbak bottles with the spill-proof bite valve. We liked the bottle and especially the valve but once we found out they had BPA we got rid of them. Camelbak recently changed the plastic they use in these bottles to Tritan. To improve it further, they came out with an insulated version which they let me do a review of.
The Camelbak Insulated Better Bottle is a well made bottle. The insulated bottle is created by suspending a smaller bottle inside a larger bottle. This creates air space between the bottles which insulates the contents from the outside air. This air space also prevents the bottle from forming condensation on the outside. So no matter how cold the liquid inside is, the bottle will not sweat on the outside. The bottle has a silicone bite valve that is attatched to a straw inside the bottle. This bite valve can be openned to drink out of and closed to seal it shut. The outside cap has a built in loop for hooking into or grabbing on to. The most important characteristic of the Better Bottle line is that they are BPA free. No more crazy chemicals leaching into my drinks.
Other important note on this bottle is that it is easy to clean but not dishwasher safe due to the insulated bottle. The bite valve, cap, and straw can be put into the dishwasher to be cleaned. Camelbak also covers these bottles with their CamelBak Got Your Bak Lifetime Guarantee. This guarantee covers workmanship on the bottle. If you ever need to you can purchase new silicone bite valves and straws.
The Camelbak Insulated Better Bottle does keep hot liquids hot and cold liquids cold. That is right, you can put hot liquids in the bottle as well as cold. It is a bit scary to drink hot liquids up through the straw because it is tough to tell how hot the liquid is unlike when drinking out of a cup. Apart from this the hot liquids work just as well in the bottle. The new Tritan material is BPA Free and durable. The bottle does not hold on to flavors if you make sure to clean it from time to time. Any bottle will get fugly without cleaning.
The top cap seals tightly and does not leak. Neither does the bite valve. It is easy to drink out of when you are done you can easily shut it. I decided to do a little test of the bottle and filled it up with half ice cubes and half cold water to see how long it would take for the ice cubes to melt. The bottle was at my desk all day and the ice cubes lasted 6+ hours. During this time I was not taking any drinks which may change the results slightly as no air circulated in. You should be drinking 0.6 L (20 oz) in this amount of time anyway. =)
Overall I liked the Camelbak Insulated Better Bottle for everyday use. I find it to be slightly large and bulky for the amount of liquid it can carry, so I would not suggest it for hiking or climbing where efficiency is at a premium. In the car, at work, or just around town is where this bottle shines. It can be used for hot or cold liquids and lasts a long time. I really like having the bite valve and straw when in the car as it makes it easy to get a drink without spilling it all down you. Being able to close the valve is another great feature for people who spill or when it needs to go in a backpack. The one drawback of the straw as it does not reach the bottom of the bottle so inevitably some liquid is left at the bottom. I have been using this bottle for a couple months now and it is still going strong. I have not been too hard on it but it has been drop and is still solid. I will check back in if anything changes. For a 0.6 liter (20 oz) bottle you can find more compact bottles but not many that are also insulated. At $20 retail I think the bottle is fairly priced. As always, your mileage may vary.
