Salomon is a large player in the Trail Running Community, especially over in Europe. Over the last couple years, they have steadily grown in the US, and I have used and reviewed several of their products. Salomon’s products are made with more of a technical focus compared to their competitors, and this can be seen in the designs and materials used. In the fall, I was sent a trail running shirt to test, the only drawback was it was at the start of winter.
I tested this shirt both running and on some of my indoor workouts. Since it is short sleeved I was limited on how many days I could thoroughly test alone. Many days it was layered over a baselayer. After some time, I was able to take it on vacation to Hawaii and finally test it in hotter conditions.
The Salomon Trail Runner II ½ Zip Tech Tee is not a whole lot different than many of the other tech tees on the market.
The tee is made of two fabrics. Both fabrics are a polyester and spandex mix for moisture wicking and stretch. The main material is tight knit while the second material is a perforated material. This perforated material has a softer feel to it and should breathe better. It is located under the arms for keeping your temperature down and help with arm movement. The Top also has a front zipper for venting. This zipper has a semi locking zipper pull and zipper garage for comfort against the chin and neck. In the back on the right hip, there is a small pocket that can be used to store gels or an iPod. There is an audio port inside the pocket if you do choose to put a music player in there.
The shirt has plenty of reflective branding on it to make it easy to be seen in lower light conditions. You can see this reflective material in the pictures, the flash on my camera makes them stand out. The other interesting thing about the appearance is that Salomon used two different colors of thread for the seams. The left side of the shirt has white flat locked seams while the right side is red. I give s the top a different look than others in the market and I personally like it. The Trail Runner Tee is lightweight and seems well made.
There is no indication that the fabrics of this top are from sustainable resources but Salomon themselves is working to be more environmentally responsible. Salomon is actively trying to understand and limit the negative environmental impact of their business. Their second goal is to create a culture of environmental responsibility as a natural part of the education and daily work for all employees, collaborators, and partners of Salomon. To be more responsible they have broken it down to five things: understanding their environmental impact, reducing CO2 emissions, reducing reliance on non-renewable resources, eliminating toxicity, and developing products and processes, which are environmentally friendly throughout their life cycle. I think with Salomon looking in the mirror and analyzing their company; they are on the right track.
Comfort Next to Skin (40%)
Ease of Movement (30%)
Torso Sizing (30%)
The Salomon Trail Runner Tee is made to fit close to the skin.
I tested a size large in this top as it was what I was sent. I am normally a size medium and was initially skeptical about this top being a large. Even though it was a size too big it did not wear that way. The tee fit closer to a normal medium, and I think the medium would have been nearly form fitting. With the size large I could layer a baselayer underneath on cooler days, and it still fit well enough on its own that I did not notice its size. All the seams on the shirt are flat locked for comfort next to the skin. Salomon also uses Smart Skin construction, which places the seams in strategic locations for comfort. For example, there are no seams on top of the shoulders for comfort while wearing a hydration pack.
The shirt is made with gusseted underarms for better ease of movement. This along with the Elastane in both fabrics gives this top excellent stretch. Behind the front zipper and over the top is a zipper guard for comfort against the skin. Both around the neck and the arms the shirt felt about right. I never thought about it being too loose or too tight. I would have liked to try the medium, but I must say the large fit close to how most brand’s medium does.
Drying Speed (20%)
Moisture Transport (30%)
The Trail Runner Tech Tee is lightweight at only 116 grams. Both fabrics breathe well, even in the hot and humid temperatures of Hawaii.
The top also does a descent job moving moisture away from the skin, but it was easy to overwhelm the top with sweat. When that did happen, the tee dried quickly. Especially when it was hot out. The front zip is helpful at allowing you to vent further if you are overheating. The pocket at the back is small but works well for lighter things such as a gel or small iPod. But if you put too heavy of items in there, they will bounce around a bit. This top is not only made for running, it would be equally good for hiking or other activities. With no seems on the shoulders, this shirt would be great for carrying a pack.
Overall, the Salomon Trail Runner II ½ Zip Tech Tee is a quality top but is not all that different than other options in the market. The fit runs slightly smaller than comparable shirts which you should take into account if you are looking to purchase this. Salomon uses high-quality fabrics and does have solid construction on the top but at $55, I am not sure all that justifies the price. The front zip and cool appearance do add something. I do think it is a good top that has been carefully thought out and would not discourage anyone from purchasing it. Just keep your eyes out for a sale here or there. As always, your mileage may vary.
