YMMV Review

Icebreaker has been making their GT line for a couple years now. It features sport cuts with 97% merino wool and 3% Lycra. They just recently introduced their Cycling line in the spring of 2011. The SS Roto Zip is a mountain bike jersey in that line. If you would like to know more about wool, check the link below.

Design ★★★½☆

The Icebreaker SS Roto Zip is a semi-fitted short sleeved mountain bike jersey. It is made out of Icebreaker’s GT200 fabric. This fabric is a lighter weight fabric, one step heavier than their GT150 fabric; the lightest that they use. The GT200 fabric is made out of 97% 200 g/m2 merino wool and 3% Lycra. Lycra is used because it aids in shape retention and improves fit. There are two styles of fabric used. One is a standard dense knit and the other is eyeleted for improved breathability. The eyeleted fabric is used on the top of the back and under the arms. The Roto has flat lock seems everywhere except around the front zipper. The jersey has 1 small zippered pocket on the lower right back.

One of the cool things about all Icebreaker products is the Baacode. On the tag inside the jersey there is a code. You can go to the Icebreaker website and type in this code and it will show you what farms in New Zealand the wool was sourced from. There is even information about each individual farm. I like the idea of knowing where my stuff is coming from whether it is food or clothing.  The Baa Code for my jersey is: A3B096A23.  Type it in below to see where my jersey was sourced. Also the merino wool is Zque certified. This includes assurance that production systems meet suitable standards for the stewardship of livestock, management of the environment and socially responsible practices, and that the resulting products are of the highest quality.

Fabrics

Fit ★★★★☆

The SS Roto Zip is a semi-fitted jersey. It is not too loose or too tight.  I find that there is a little room throughout the jersey but it does not bunch up anywhere. There is a short collar around the neck and the length of the jersey is good. When wearing mountain bike shorts I never have to worry about it being too short even without a gripper at the bottom of the hem. I am normally a medium and this jersey fits exactly how I expected it to.

Performance ★★★½☆

As with all wool tops this jersey does not stink. After several wearings the jersey does not have that odor synthetics have. I have used this jersey not only for riding but for some runs as well and it had worked well for running too. The difference between this and their running tops is the location of the eyelet paneling and fit. But this jersey worked well for running too. The 200 weight fabric is a good weight for all but the warmest days. I would like a 150 weight jersey for days that are really hot. The fabric is soft to the touch and feels comfortable next to the skin. The zipper is great for venting and the pocket is good for some smaller items. I wish it had an audio out for days when I wanted to run or ride with music. The other noticeable omission is reflective elements. This jersey would make a good bike touring jersey and it would be even better with reflective elements. There are no grippers at the hems and it does not need any. The jersey stays in place. The fabric does a good job with breathability and moisture transfer. It even blocks a bit of wind. The nice thing about wool is it traps the moisture in the fabric so it always feels dry and comfortable next to the skin.

Pocket

Overall ★★★★☆

The Icebreaker SS Roto Zip is good mountain bike jersey. It is really understated and I like that. I am not a fan of being a billboard and the branding on this piece is nice and subtle. I have enjoyed riding in this jersey, it is definitely a put on and forget about it piece. That is how I want it so I can spend more time taking in the scenery. I would definitely recommend this jersey for a cyclist looking for a looser fit jersey and it can also be used as a running top. As with all Icebreaker apparel, the Roto Zip is well made, I have not had any issues with durability even after wearing a backpack. As always, your mileage may vary.

Pros

  • Made out of wool
  • Subtle graphics
  • Can be used for a multitude of activities

Cons

  • No audio port in pocket
  • No reflective elements
