Over the years, I have had several races give out hats to its participants. Most notably the Ironman Branded races give out hats with the race logo on them. When you think of race swag, you normally think of cheap stuff that may or may not be useful. Well, at Ironman’s the hats that were handed out were made by Headsweats. Apart from feeling like I am kind of showing off when I wear them, they perform quite well and have been very durable. I asked Headsweats if I could test out their new race hat and SpinCycle Cap.
The Headsweats Race Hat is made of Eventure Woven fabric (100% Polyester) that breathes well and wicks moisture away from your head. Eventure Woven is lightweight, tear resistant, vibrant color, and overtime will not see any loss in wicking ability. The hat is made of five panels with flat seams both inside and out. What truly makes this a Headsweats hat is the CoolMax Terry lined headband. This headband is soft next to the skin, and wicks sweat away from the head. The bill is of normal length and adjustable to the amount of bend that you find preferable. It is also black on the underside which helps create less glare on the eyes. This race hat comes in two different graphics schemes, each with a couple color combinations. The graphics go up the outside of the bill and flow up the outside front of the hat. There is also a Headsweats logo on the side. These hats are the #1 custom hat in the Headsweats line. For that reason, the front panel is completely clear of graphics allowing Headsweats to create custom hats. The hat is a one size fits all with an adjustable buckle in the back and a ponytail exit. The Headsweats Race Custom Hat is nice and light, weighing in at less than 2 ounces.
The Headsweats Race Hat fits my head well in most spots. The CoolMax headliner is very comfortable next to the skin. The adjustable buckle in the back does a good job cinching down the size and does not loosen up when running. I have not tried the ponytail port as I have short hair, but I did play with the buckle a little and it is easy to use even when it is behind your head. The bill is a good length as well, not too long where it looks funny but a good length to shade the eyes. The only thing that I was not a fan of on the hat is the corners of the front panel create a boxy look to the front of the hat on me. I prefer a hat that stays flat against my head the entire time. The original race hat by Headsweats seems to fit me slightly better. This is obviously a personal preference, check out the photo to see what I mean.
The hat does truly keep my head cool and the sun out of my eyes. The CoolMax fabric also does a good job of pulling sweat away from my head. Since I shave my hair short I have lots of sweat that runs down into my eyes, and this hat does a great job of soaking all that up and evaporating it off. In the late summer here in Bend it was in the upper 80s, and low 90s and the hat got lots of use. The only issue I have with it is the white color become dingy and sweat stained after a couple runs. This is probably due to the amount of sweat and the smoke that was in the air due to the local forest fires at the time. At least, the hat can be machine washed. To clean, just machine wash warm on the gentle cycle and with a cold rinse. Hang the hat to dry when done, do not machine dry. I have shown a picture of the dirty hat and cleaned one to show how well it cleaned up. My white Headsweats hat with the CoolMax shell does not show these sweat lines as quickly but will eventually also need to be washed.
Overall, the Headsweats Race Hat with Sublimated Graphics is a cool-looking hat that performs well. Their hats always seem to fit me, and I do not have to worry about them once they are on. They just work. I wish this one did not show the sweat stains so easily but at least that means it is working. I imagine if you have more hair than me this might not be as big an issue as your hair will soak some of it up. Headsweats really does make a nice hat, and I would definitely recommend them. I would love to get a “YMMV Reviews” hat made up in the future! At $24 I think the hat is fairly priced. Check out the SpinCycle Cycling Cap as well. As always, your mileage may vary.
